Rafael del Pino architectural scholarship for the restoration of artistic and cultural heritage at the Academy of Spain in Rome
In 2006, the Rafael del Pino Foundation and the Academy of Spain in Rome set up the Rafael del Pino architectural scholarship for the restoration of artistic and cultural heritage, attached to the Academy.
The Academy of Spain in Rome is responsible for announcing the scholarship and applications may be submitted by candidates who hold a higher degree in Architecture on the date the award is made. The scholarship is for 9 months.
The beneficiary of the scholarship for 2008-9 was Jorge Alberto Galindo Díaz, an architect and Associate Professor at the National University of Colombia. The project being undertaken is entitled “Puentes históricos de arco de ladrillo en la región del Alto Cauca, Colombia (siglos XVIII y XIX): técnicas de rehabilitación y conservación” [Historic brick arch bridges in the High Cauca Region of Colombia (18th & 19th centuries): techniques of restoration and conservation].
The first time the scholarship was awarded, for the 2007-8 academic year, the merits and calibre of the candidates and the projects presented were so high that it was decided to award two scholarships instead of one. The beneficiaries, José María Sánchez García, an architect and lecturer in design at Madrid Polytechnic University College of Architecture, and Federico Wulff, an architect and lecturer at Granada University, took part in the ‘Inventio. Rome Scholars 2007/2008’ exhibition, held at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid from 17 November to 14 December 2008.
